The technology company VINCORION based in Wedel has signed a contract for the delivery of more than 700 EPG huskyV W 600 onboard generators for the Boxer. Additional orders for future projects are expected, meaning orders for a total of more than 1,000 generators are anticipated. This demonstrates the performance of the company’s military energy systems in armored vehicles, too.

The new VINCORION generator, the EPG huskyV W 600, is a water-cooled onboard generator for use in all scenarios: in the Boxer, it can see to the vehicle’s power supply as well as supplying the various mission modules as it supplies power of up to 600 amperes, making it ready for future requirements, too. A new digital voltage regulator has been incorporated, enabling the generator to be adapted to different applications.

Manufacturers Place Their Trust in VINCORION Components

VINCORION has now signed a framework agreement with KNDS Germany. “Delivery of the generator for the Boxer is a very important order for us,” says Dr. Stefan Stenzel, managing director of VINCORION. “This tells us demand for the Boxer remains high. It also shows that manufacturers of modern military technology are placing their trust in VINCORION components and are using these to equip their vehicles.”

The order currently amounts to approximately twelve million euros. The company anticipates additional orders being placed for these modern generators.

Power Increased from 370 to 600 Amperes

“The new generator fits perfectly in the vehicles’ installation space,” explains Stenzel. This means that, in addition to all new vehicles, existing vehicles could likewise be equipped with it if demand for power grows. The predecessor model, the SF 217, was able to deliver 370 amperes, and this has been increased to 600 amperes in the new version. “Modern military technology requires more energy, among other things for communications and air conditioning. We are specialists in the field of military energy supplies. Be it power supplies for sophisticated electronics or for radar systems, our generator reliably supplies the energy needed.”

Intensive vehicle testing with the Boxer featuring the new generator system has already been conducted in the UK and Australia. The new EPG huskyV W 600 model has therefore already demonstrated its reliability. The VINCORION engineers also report that its performance remained stable at all times in vehicle test-drives of more than 1,000 kilometers conducted in Switzerland. The water cooling of the generator means it can operate irrespective of the ambient conditions.

Peak Performance at all Times

The temperatures in the cooling circuit can increase significantly without adversely affecting performance. The generator is also water-resistant in accordance with protection class IP 67. “The generator experiences next to no losses due to changing ambient temperatures. It therefore delivers peak performance at all times,” emphasizes Stenzel.

The EPG huskyV W 600 is manufactured at the VINCORION plant in Essen, which also produces generators for the Leopard 2 tank and the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. A number of the parts such as mechanical components come from the company headquarters in Wedel. VINCORION has built up considerable expertise in generators at its Essen site – and this is what the major contract is founded on. The company also anticipates being able to recruit additional skilled workers as a result of the order.

The technology company VINCORION, based in Wedel near Hamburg, Germany, will supply a new generator test bench to Israel. This unit is tailored to the generators that VINCORION already supplies to the middle eastern nation.

“We are extremely pleased to receive this order valued at just under two million euros,” said

Sascha Brüning, Vice President Business Development & Sales. In this context, the company was ultimately awarded the order after successfully beating out not only the original supplier, but also other competitors. Thanks to its extremely high standards of quality, VINCORION was able to hold its own during the bidding process, despite the fact that it was competing against lower-priced suppliers.

In its bid for the contract, an external partner provided invaluable assistance to the company. This partner will now be responsible for manufacturing the new test bench according to VINCORION’s specifications, and it should be ready for delivery in approximately 18 months. The new system will be used to carry out maintenance work in Israel and to service the EPG huskyV generators from VINCORION.

Power for the worlds heaviest tank

The company has delivered these generators, which supply power to Merkava main battle tanks and Namer infantry fighting vehicles, for many years. At 65 tons, the Merkava IV, which is manufactured in Israel, is the world’s heaviest mass-produced tank. The Namer, as an infantry fighting vehicle, uses the Merkava chassis as its development base. When it comes to the design of the two vehicles, protecting the crew is the top priority. As such, the generators for the armored vehicles must be suitably powerful.

VINCORION’s primary role now is to fine-tune the specification and coordinate the process. “We will remain in constant contact with both the customer and with our partner/supplier until the first generator is tested on the new test bench in Israel in approximately 18 months”, says Brüning. The new order also permanently cements VINCORION’s position as a supplier to Israel.

VINCORION’s EPG huskyV generators for military and civilian applications stand out for their outstanding efficiency, even under adverse environmental conditions, low maintenance costs throughout their service life, and compact, modular design. They can be scaled to fit customer requirements.

Large Quantity of New Controllers for Merkava

In addition to the generators, VINCORION also supplies controllers for the vehicles, which are used to regulate the power generated by the units. For the Merkava tank, the company has only manufactured small batches of the RK199 type controllers so far, often ten to twenty units.

The new solution is much more attractive for the Israeli customer and the company – it will produce a larger batch. Work on the batch has now begun at VINCORION’s sites in Essen and Wedel. Over the course of the next three months, the employees there will build and test a total of 700 controllers. Fifty units have already been manufactured and tested to date. This order has a total value of 1.2 million euros.

The mechatronics manufacturer VINCORION has received an order to supply spare parts for the PUMA infantry fighting vehicle’s weapon aiming and tracking system, which is used by NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), among others. The order has a total value of approximately 5.3 million euros. The company plans to deliver the first components before the end of this year.

The PUMA, developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall Landsysteme (RLS), is one of the world’s most advanced infantry fighting vehicles. The IFV has been supplied to the German Army in its standard configuration since 2015. The mechatronics manufacturer VINCORION is the main supplier of 14 different assemblies for the 170 kW high-performance power system as well as for the digital electrical gun turret drive system.

“The PUMA features cutting-edge technologies across all system areas that exemplify the innovative strength and competitiveness of the German defense industry,” said Dr. Stefan Stenzel, Managing Director of VINCORION. “We are proud to be able to help the PUMA maintain its technological leadership throughout its entire product life cycle with our state-of-the-art stabilization systems.”

Combat Effectiveness Enhancement for the VJTF’s PUMA IFV

With around 5,000 soldiers, the VJTF is part of the NATO Response Force (NRF), a high-readiness force comprising land, air, sea, and special forces units capable of rapid deployment. The alliance’s member states provide their forces for the unit on a rotating basis. Starting in 2023, the German Armed Forces will assume a leading role in the VJTF.

To this end, the combat effectiveness of 44 PUMA infantry fighting vehicles is being enhanced to meet the operational requirements of the rapid response force. In this context, additional quantities of spare parts are required to guarantee the vehicles’ unrestricted operational readiness.
